Foodpanda partners with local restaurants in the City of Love

ILOILO, PHILIPPINES -- Grounded on its advocacy of helping local restaurants nationwide, foodpanda, an on-demand food delivery service in the Philippines, partnered with three restaurants in Iloilo City so that Ilonggos could have a taste of specially made food and drinks at a reasonable price.

foodpanda definitely has got your love for food covered by sharing the great stories of three of their restaurant partners and how the platform helped their business:

Akamon Ramen Bar started out in 2018 as a small ramen shop in a food park located in Iloilo City. Back then, it was still called Ramen Raku until they decided to take a big leap and opened a stand-alone ramen restaurant in SM Strata this year. The new name, Akamon, means a red gate (door) in Japanese.

Mr. Bryan Te, owner of Akamon Ramen Bar, started the business, wanting to serve authentic Japanese food to its customers in hopes of becoming one of the leading ramen chains in Iloilo City. “Always dream big and put quality first before anything else. There will be struggles along the way but you have to keep up and think of innovative ideas'', shared Mr. Te.

Kai Royal Tea started out only last year but they are already bringing lots of smiles to people living in Iloilo City because of their milk teas and refreshing drinks. The owner of the milk tea shop, Mr. Keano Lev Eslabon, has plans of branching out soon and his team is also working on franchising the business in order to open more branches in the city.

"Always study the market first to understand it and focus on your customers without forgetting about your employees. Make sure you have enough knowledge of the industry you’ll be involved in. Lastly, there will always be risks but you can manage risk by planning ahead", said Mr. Eslabon.

Another homegrown brand, Monkey Grounds Coffee, which started in 2016, serves healthy meatless food. It has always been Ms. Glaiza Wong-Nava and Ms. Goldline Wong's dream to have a coffee shop and as business owners, they discussed how there's a lot of challenges along the way but they always try to improve and do their best as receiving good feedback from their valued customers is very rewarding.

"No one is going to take care of your business but you. You need to put your heart and soul into it and to stay motivated when problems arise. It’s also important that your family understands your long hours spent in the business but at the same time you also need to balance business, and family, and personal life", said Ms. Nava.

The three business owners shared how foodpanda was instrumental during the difficult times of community quarantines, with its convenient ordering and delivery process. foodpanda truly has got its partner restaurants and customers covered.

Globe provides free data access to DepEd’s online learning platform

Teachers and students interested in advancing their knowledge while under enhanced community quarantine may now visit the Department of Education’s (DepEd) new online learning platform, DepEd Commons, without incurring data charges on their Globe or TM-powered smartphones.

DepEd Commons contains online review materials and Open Educational Resources (OER) authored by public school teachers who are subject matter experts. Teachers can retain, reuse, revise, remix, and redistribute the content by blending it with a learning management system to deliver a distance learning modality.

“In this time of crisis, it is important that we make it possible to overcome this challenge with solid partnerships with the private sector. We are thankful to Globe for supporting our initiative for the continuity of public education by providing us free data for DepEd Commons access amidst the COVID-19 situation,” said DepEd Secretary Leonor Magtolis-Briones.

Alain Del B. Pascua, DepEd Undersecretary for Administration, on the other hand said, “We are facing many challenges in ensuring the continuity of education especially in this extremely difficult situation that we are in.  In partnership with Globe, DepEd is steadily moving forward in bringing educational resources to the teachers and the learners wherever they may be."

By providing free access to DepEd Commons (https://commons.deped.gov.ph), Globe hopes to encourage educators and learners to take advantage of supplementary online instructional materials without worrying about data charges.

These resources were designed to serve as alternative forms in the teaching-learning process during class suspensions and other similar circumstances.

“Under this situation where teachers and students have to stay at home like many of us, it is important for learning to continue.  Globe supports the education sector by providing access to this alternative learning platform free of charge,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe Chief Sustainability Officer and SVP for Corporate Communications.

The website also integrates  the Globe eLibrary, an online platform which features age-appropriate and engaging e-books ranging from storybooks for children and young adults to textbooks on core subjects such as Math, Science, English, Filipino, Music, Arts, among others.  Globe eLibrary also has a collection of eLearning videos, some of which were developed by teachers themselves, which introduce important concepts in English, Math, and Science, incorporating sights and sounds that are familiar to the students.

However, while access to the site using the Globe/TM network will not entail any data charges, it does not cover the links outside the DepEd Commons domain.  Thus, all links clicked and visited will still incur standard data charges.

Telecom technicians keep households connected amidst COVID-19 threat

Despite mounting fears over the continuous spread of COVID-19 in the country, hardworking telecom technicians bravely go to the field day in and day out, leaving the safety of their homes just to ensure that customers are connected even while under enhanced community quarantine.

Installers, repairmen, and other technicians working for Globe Telecom’s various contractors all over the country, for instance, visit as many as 10 homes a day but their challenges start before they reach the residence of the customers.  Many barangays refused to grant them entry even with government orders exempting telecom services from ECQ.

“Mahirap po pakiusapan ibang barangay na papasukin mga technicians natin, kung minsan kami naharap at pinapakita namin yung ID na issued ng Globe pero ayaw pa din (We’re having difficulties requesting some barangays to allow our technicians to enter their areas.  Sometimes, we even have to face them and show the IDs issued by Globe but they still refuse), said Nerissa Gama, EdgeComm Field Supervisor.

They also have to face apprehensive customers who are now wary of allowing strangers into their homes due to the virus threat.

“May subs po na ang trato samin parang may COVID na din kami. Hindi po kami pinapapasok sa loob na ng bahay.  Ung iba po halos paliguan kami ng alcohol bago kami papasukin sa bahay nila. (There are subscribers who treat us like we are COVID patients.  They don’t allow us to enter their houses.  Others would almost bathe us in alcohol before they allow us to go inside their house),” said Christian Almonte, a repair technician of EdgeComm in Metro Manila.

Aside from the challenges at work, the frontliners also have to bear the burden of being away from their loved ones at this time when most families stay at home.

Jedlian technician in Tarlac, Alvin Fronda, whose wife and three kids reside in Nueva Ecija, said:  “Ngayon po mahirap po kasi malayo sa pamilya  pero pinipilit ko pong kayanin  dahil sa trabaho po na to para po sa pamilya ko at sa company po ng Jedlian and Globe  para sa serbisyo po. (Right now, it’s hard because I am far from my family but I’m trying my best to carry on because this work is for my family, for Jedlian and Globe, and for service).”

But despite the hardships,  each of them only has one goal in mind -  to keep customers connected especially in this time of need.

“Unang inisip namin frontliners kami dahil contractor kami ni Globe. Ang kailangan ng tao lalo ngayon naka lockdown at nasa bahay lang sila para makabalita sa mga kamaganak nila ay internet at telepono para may komunikasyon (The first thing that we think of is that we are frontliners because we are Globe contractors.  With the lockdown where people are at home, they need the internet and phone to communicate with their relatives),” said Michael Ariza, technician of Visatech in Manila.

Michael’s words were echoed by Larry Antenor, Technician of JBD in South Luzon province who proudly said: “Dahil po frontliners tayo. Basta may problema ang internet ng subs kailangang ipagpatuloy natin ang serbisyo at responsibilidad natin sa subs (We are frontliners.  If the customers have a problem with their internet, it is our responsibility to continue providing services to them).”

Globe, for its part, expressed gratitude and extended full support to the frontliners who make sure that telecom services are always available to the country and its citizens.

"Our critical skeletal team of technicians are hard at work to provide support for Globe At Home broadband lines so that our customers remain productive, connected and informed.  In line with this, we continue to implement stringent health check protocols to ensure the overall safety and well-being of our customers, our installers and repairmen,” said Martha Sazon, Globe SVP and Head of Broadband Business.

Health and safety measures undertaken by all Globe at Home installers and repairmen begin before deployment, consisting of the following:

▪ They must pass a series of health checks such as a body temperature of less than 37.8°C, no signs of cough or cold, and no difficulty in breathing or pain in the throat and chest area.
▪ Installers must also disclose if they have gotten in touch with anyone who has displayed any of the aforementioned symptoms, or has come from a country affected with COVID-19.
▪ Before leaving for deployment, installers must also pass hand wash, alcohol and water stations to stay clean and hydrated

At the same time, technicians are required to ask homeowners three mandatory COVID screening questions to protect themselves.  The questions are:  1)  Is there any household member considered as a person under investigation or monitoring or has fever, cough or breathing difficulties? 2) Has anyone undergone COVID testing and has either tested positive or is still waiting for results? And 3) Has anyone arrived from abroad in the last 14 days?  If the answer is Yes to one or more questions, the technicians are advised not to proceed but instead return after 14 days.

Ensuring the safety of its frontliners and customers is part of the ongoing efforts of Globe in making everyone connected, informed and #SafeAtHome amid the extended ECQ in Luzon. Learn more via https://www.globe.com.ph/stay-safe-at-home.html

Cebu Landmasters expands footprint to downtown Iloilo City with residential tower

CLI signs JV agreement with leading Iloilo City builder

Leading Visayas-Mindanao developer Cebu Landmasters Inc. (CLI) intends to further strengthen its presence in Western Visayas with the development of a P1.5 billion residential condominium project anchored by high-visibility retail spaces in a strategic Iloilo City location.

The listed firm recently signed a joint venture agreement with businessman Alfonso Tan, chairman of International Builders Corporation (IBC), for a high-rise residential tower on a prime corner lot in the city’s downtown area. CLI will own 50% of the residential development and will manage the development. IBC, who recently developed the GT Town Center Mall in Pavia, will simultaneously develop a downtown mall that connects to the residential tower. The tower will be the first condo offering in the highly accessible downtown area.

CLI chief executive officer Jose Soberano III disclosed: “We are very proud to forge this partnership with Mr. Alfonso Tan and his family. He has established IBC as the leading construction firm in the region, and both our homegrown companies are motivated by the opportunity to contribute further to Iloilo’s exceptional growth.”

The project will be planned and completed within a four-year time frame. Over the same period, CLI will also establish close to 1200 units of its top-selling economic house and lot Casa Mira Iloilo in a 14-hectare lot in Jaro. The project is wholly owned by CLI and land development has already commenced.

Cebu Landmasters which began two decades ago catering to the housing needs of employees in Cebu province’s industrializing areas currently has projects in nine VisMin cities outside of its home base Cebu City. From employee housing, it popularized residential condominium living in strategic urban locations in Cebu City, Cagayan de Oro and Davao City.

Currently, CLI has a range of housing brands from starter homes in the economic segment, to residential condominiums targeted towards mid-market dwellers to top-end residential units in prime city locations. Its versatility in the residential development prompted the firm to launch P14 billion worth of projects in the first nine months alone of 2019 in key VisMin cities including mixed-use complexes that integrate residential, office and commercial uses.

A number of these integrated developments in Cebu, Davao and Bacolod will include hotels. CLI’s first hotel opened in September this year with 180 rooms. The listed company is projected to have 1,350 rooms in seven locations by 2022.

CLI was named as Best Developer in Visayas and Mindanao in the recently concluded The Outlook 2019 Awards

Ford Philippines Brings Back Safe Driving Program In Iloilo

ILOILO CITY, Philippines, 28 October 2019 – Ford Philippines is bringing back its Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) program in Iloilo City with an aim to educate more drivers to become safer and more responsible while on the road.

The DSFL, now on its second year in Iloilo, will be held on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at the Iloilo Convention Center, Megaworld Boulevard, Mandurriao, Iloilo City with three (3) training sessions at 10:00am, 12:30pm, and 2:00pm. Interested participants can send a text message Tuason Racing School via 0956-5644385 to reserve a slot for free.

The automotive company first brought its safe driving program in Iloilo last year, training close to 500 private and public utility drivers, student drivers, and traffic and road management personnel. The participants learned more about the benefits of smart, safe, and fuel-efficient driving as well as the necessary driving skills to help minimize road accidents, altercations, and traffic congestion.

This year, Ford is looking to partner with taxi, bus and transport network vehicle services (TNVS) companies as well as with traffic management bureaus and colleges and universities within Iloilo to reach more drivers and instill to them the importance of road safety – either as a driver or as part of the commuting public.

Ford is also reaching out to various call center companies to enjoin its employees as DSFL participants and train them to be road safety advocates. Ford is also tapping its customers in its dealerships and Ford car clubs in Iloilo to make them part of the training audience.

DSFL participants can expect to learn more about the dangers of distracted driving and drunk driving, as well as tips and techniques in driving under special conditions and vehicle handling in this year’s sessions. They will also be refreshed with road statistics and relevant regulations such as the Child Safety in Motor Vehicles Act.

Flagship corporate social responsibility program
The DSFL program is one of Ford’s biggest corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs globally, bringing to life its long-standing advocacy on road safety. A United Nations-recognized training program, the DSFL is now on its 12th year in the Philippines and has successfully trained over 23,000 Filipino drivers since 2008. Over the years, the program has made itself relevant with the changing road conditions, policies, and government regulations.

The DSFL program is a combination of classroom training that includes modules on vehicle handling, driving in special conditions, anti-distracted driving, and fuel-efficient driving, as well as a hands-on driving simulation that allows participating drivers to apply their learnings from the classroom sessions. The DSFL program is offered to participating drivers for free.

“One of our commitments at Ford is to help promote and improve road safety in the country. Our aim every year is to increase driver safety awareness with the DSFL, practicing the proper skills required of anybody who gets behind the wheel and ensuring that drivers and their passengers get to their destinations safely all the time,” shares EJ Francisco, AVP, Communications, Ford Philippines.

The DSFL has been a consistent recipient of awards in the country. Early this year, it bagged a Gold Award in the road safety category of the 3rd Driven to Serve Awards of the Society of Philippine Motoring Journalists (SPMJ).

Driving Skills for Life was established in the United States in 2003 by Ford Motor Company Fund, the U.S. Governors Highway Safety Association, and a panel of safety experts, to teach newly licensed drivers the necessary skills for safe driving beyond what is learned in standard driver education programs.

For more information on Ford Driving Skills for Life, interested parties can visit Ford Philippines’ Facebook page or send an e-mail to fgpcomms@ford.com.
